“The teacher is like the candle, which lights others in consuming itself”

I have entitled this blog "Consuming the Candle" because that is the tug-of-war that is in play for every teaching artist. Especially those who teach children. I teach fine arts at the Raleigh Girls Club. My students feed me while simultaneously draining me of all my creative energy. There lies the contradiction. How can a teacher give her all to creating her own work when she is already giving her all to another venture? A venture that demands the same resources that blinding blank canvas demands. My work is an attempt at reconciling, not answering, that nagging question.
